XL quilted toppers

Where: Fendi and Christopher Raeburn

The risk factor: There’s nothing remotely forgiving about this look if you’re busty or curvy. Fact. So as soon as you reconcile that no belt or toggle will shrink your waist the better. Its redeeming qualities? It’s the cosiest and chicest way to negotiate the cold weather. Duvet days are calling.

Getting it right: Team a lightweight, oversized style with a roll-neck and cropped flares — fewer layers and tonal styling will slim down the top-heavy look. Then add block-heel calf boots to elongate your torso and legs.

Where to shop for it: Try Whistles for a pared-back, padded bomber and Monki for a budget-friendly, velveteen option.

Furry footwear

Where: Maison Margiela and Shrimps

The risk factor: The new wave of faux fur footwear may be fresh and fancy but there’s good reason the abominable snowman earned the moniker “Big Foot”. Need we say more?

Getting it right: Embrace the furbulous platform as your killer heel of choice. Sock it up with a trouser suit or front-split skirt for a furry footnote without any head-to-toe fluff.

Where to shop for it: Dip your toe in the trend with Kurt Geiger’s faux-fur-embellished platforms or make a statement with a pair of bargain fur-lined heels from ASOS.

Underwear as outerwear

Where: Gucci and Rag & Bone

The risk factor: For most a hint of décolleté remains an acceptable flash of flesh but this season’s sheer lace dresses, vests and peekaboo panels take on a new peep show spin.

Getting it right: Layer a lace-edged slip dress over a white T-shirt and longline waistcoat, or rock a short-sleeved turtleneck beneath a see-through, floral cami.

Where to shop for it: For an extensive collection of lace lingerie and bodies look to M&S’s Autograph range and check out H&M’s plunging chiffon playsuit for a retro-modern alternative to the traditional camisole.
