Cher once admitted she felt pressure to look youthful in a bid to keep her place in the pop world.

But it appears that after years of cosmetic surgery, she's beginning to lose her battle to turn back time.

The 61-year-old shocked onlookers with her alarmingly taut face, brassy red wig and disastrous black and grey confection as she emerged onto the red carpet at the Grammy awards last night.

As she introduced a performance by Beyonce and Tina Turner, she quipped: "As many of you know, I first started singing when Lincoln was president, and I know a star when I see one."

Cher has previously admitted to a facelift, as well as procedures to improve her teeth and breasts, and has even described herself as a "plastic surgery poster girl."

She has said she has no plans to age gracefully: "Everyone says I am terrified of getting old, but the truth is that in my job becoming old and becoming extinct are one and the same thing.

To that end, the star has achieved success – she is set to return to the stage for a three-year engagement at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Cher's 200-show run - which alternates with performances from Bette Midler and Sir Elton John - begins in May at the Colosseum. Tickets range from £48 to £128.

She has said: "I started in Vegas at Caesars so I've come full circle. I'm back, and I plan to give my fans the best experience yet."

"I think everybody knows I only do things in a big way."

Last year, Celine Dion completed a five-year engagement at the 4,300-seat Colosseum.
