It wasn't a good night for British talent last night, with none of the home-grown nominees picking-up an Oscar in the big categories.

British hopefuls Kate Winslet and Imelda Staunton both lost out to Hilary Swank when she won best actress for her portrayal of a determined boxer in Million Dollar Baby.

Londoner Sophie Okonedo, up for Best Supporting Actress for Hotel Rwanda, lost out to Cate Blanchett who won for her role as Katharine Hepburn in The Aviator.

And Coventry-born star Clive Owen had been nominated in the best supporting actor category for Closer but Morgan Freeman, passed over at the Oscars three times previously, was always a favourite.

Andrew Lloyd Webber also left without an award as his original song for The Phantom Of The Opera, was pipped by the Motorcycle Diaries.

The British names which came away successful from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre represented far less high-profile categories.

Andrea Arnold won best live action short film for Wasp, a tale about a single mother living with four children in Arnold's hometown of Dartford.

London-born Sandy Powell won the costume design award for The Aviator.
