John Barrowman's on-screen gay romp in 'Torchwood' has been axed.

The actor plays racy bisexual Captain Jack Harkness in the BBC One drama and during one raunchy moment in the latest series, he enjoys a tryst with a hunky barman, which was due to go out just 20 minutes after the 9pm watershed.

While scene has already been shown on US cable channel Starz - which co-founded the drama - BBC bosses have decided to axe it amid fears of a viewer backlash.

A source said: "It wasn't that it was a gay scene that worried people, but just the fact it was such an explicit sex scene, full stop. You can get away with scenes like that on American cable channels, but you can't on primetime BBC One.

"Even though the show airs after the watershed, it has a lot of young fans who would have been shocked at the graphic nature of the sex."

A BBC spokeswoman confirmed the romp had been axed along with a gruesome scene later in the series.

She told The Sun: "The UK and US versions of 'Torchwood' are slightly different. However, these differences do not change the story in any way and the strong storylines are first and foremost to the series."
