Australian prime minister John Howard today called for a version of Big Brother to be axed after a woman contestant on the TV show claimed two male housemates sexually assaulted her.

The government has referred Network 10's series to a standards watchdog.

In a broadcast yesterday the 22-year-old woman was shown tearfully telling fellow contestants that one of the men had held her arms while the other rubbed his crotch in her face.

Footage, which was not broadcast, was sent to police and the three people questioned.
