Boardwalk Empire actor Michael Stuhlbarg was reportedly attacked by a homeless man while walking through Central Park in New York.

The 55-year-old was in the famous park when he was struck in the back of the head with a rock, apparently at random.

Xavier Israel, 27, was charged with assault MailOnline reports, stating that he was chased by the star before being arrested on Sunday evening.

Strangely, the attack occurred within two miles of the point where Stuhlbarg’s Boardwalk Empire character Arnold Rothstein was fatally shot.

Israel is set to face further hearings and enter a plea although it is not known whether Stuhlbarg will attend court.

He has not publicly commented on the incident.

Police said the actor declined medical assistance for the pain and bruising to his neck.

As well as playing real-life gangster Rothstein in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, he has also had parts in Call Me by Your Name, Dopestick and Your Honor.

He also featured in Channel 4 spy drama Traitors
