Dame Helen Mirren, Colin Firth and Daniel Day-Lewis led the British charge for the Golden Globes today.

Rising star: Carey Mulligan in An Education

They will be joined at next month's ceremony in Hollywood by rising stars Emily Blunt — for her depiction of The Young Victoria — and Carey Mulligan for An Education, based on the memoir of journalist Lynn Barber.

Best male performance: Colin Firth has been nominated for his role in A Single Man

While no British film emerged as a rival to Slumdog Millionaire's wipeout success last year, British talent was recognised across categories voted for by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The awards are widely seen as a strong predictor of Academy Awards success.

Film 4, producers of Slumdog, have a chance at winning top honours this year with their co-adaptation of The Lovely Bones, which secures an acting nomination for Stanley Tucci.

Golden actress: Helen Mirren's role in The Last Station sees her nominated for best actress

Both Paul McCartney and U2 are nominated for best original song, with the ex-Beatle writing I Want to Come Home for Everybody's Fine, and U2 writing Winter for Brothers.

Elegant: Emily Blunt in The Young Victoria

British expertise in animation sees Fantastic Mr Fox, made principally by animators at Three Mills Studios in east London, in the running for best animated feature against rivals including Coraline, British writer Neil Gaiman's film version of his own story.

The leading contender on the night will be Up In The Air, which picked up six nominations — including best actor for George Clooney as a corporate downsizing expert. Clooney's performance is a strong rival for Firth's hotly tipped depiction of a gay man in Tom Ford's directing debut, A Single Man.

Daniel Day-Lewis is shortlisted for his portrayal of a famous film director in the film Nine. His rivals include Robert Downey Jr in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes. Dame Helen Mirren, who won a Globe in 2007 for The Queen, is nominated this time for The Last Station, a drama about Leo Tolstoy.

The 67th Golden Globe awards will be hosted by Ricky Gervais on 17 January.
