Chicken Run is getting a long-awaited sequel as early plans for Chicken Run 2 were announced on Thursday.

The animated hit, starring Rocky and Ginger with a host of friends, is set for release in the coming years as one of the next big films from Aardman Animations.

Chicken Run – from the same company as recent hit Early Man – is the most successful stop-motion animation of all time, with a global haul of $225 million (£162 million).

The company confirmed that Chicken Run 2 is indeed in the works in a social media post, revealing that they are working with Studio Canal and Pathe on the sure-to-be hit.

Aardman Animations added that the plans are in motion for after Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon in 2019.

Fans are already beside themselves with excitement, with many praising the company for “making their week”.

One wrote: “BEST tweet of the day! By far! I'm in heaven.”

While another said: “Chicken Run 1 was brilliant, looking fwd to 2!”

“Chicken run 2 has made my day. Mr Tweedy best be in it,” added somebody else.

The Hollywood Reporter first broke the news of a sequel in the works, adding that Sam Fell will direct and Paul Kewley will produce.

They also revealed that original writers Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell are set to write the film.

The original 2002 film – co-directed by founder Peter Lord and Wallace and Gromit creator Nick Park told the story of a rooster and a hen falling in love and trying to run away from their farm but having to get past the evil farmer first.
