Actress Joanna Lumley has officially joined Twitter.

The 69-year-old Absolutely Fabulous star introduced herself to the micro blogging site earlier today.

She announced her arrival by tweeting: “Hello to all in this wonderfully intriguing world of Twitter. Jo x.”

The actress and campaigner has already gained more than 3,000 followers.

Lumley previously dismissed social media and referred to sites such as Facebook and Twitter as “wretched”.

In 2013, she told OK! magazine: "I don't even use a mobile phone because my life would be intolerable. I would have no life. I can't bear all that.

''It's wretched on those sites. People seem to be pretend friends while they aren't even talking to their real friends.''

News of Lumley's arrival on Twitter follows that of Caitlyn Jenner who introduced her new account on Monday.

Jenner, 65, posted: “I'm so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can't wait for you to get to know her/me.”

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star broke the Twitter record for the highest number of followers after she gained more than a million in four hours.

Guinness World Records confirmed the achievement which was previously held by President Obama who secured one million in five hours.
