Al Pacino was among a host of honourees awarded the 2011 National Medal of Arts at a ceremony in Washington.

The 71-year-old Godfather star was one of eight artists and patrons to receive his nation's highest honour for artists and scholars who've left "an indelible mark on American culture".

The medal was presented by President Obama in East Room of the White House. He told the recipients: "In moments of calm, as in moments of crisis; in times of triumph, as in times of tragedy: you help guide our growth as a people."

The president added: "The true power of the arts and humanities is that you speak to everyone. There is not one of us here who hasn't had their beliefs challenged by a writer's eloquence; or their knowledge deepened by a historian's insights; or their sagging spirits lifted by a singer's voice. Those are some of the most endearing and memorable moments of our lives."

However, the Scarface actor wasn't the only famous face in the house - 'Sex and the City's' Sarah Jessica Parker was on hand, snapping pictures of the president, and applauding his speech.

Pacino can now add the accolade to his other honours, which include an Academy Award, Golden Globe and an Emmy.
