Directioners are die hard One Direction fans, while Sheerios worship Ed Sheeran and Beliebers love Justin Bieber, but Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t too keen on the Cumberbitches moniker for his fans.

Benedict, 38, is “flattered” by the attention of his dedicated following of female supporters but he thinks they ought to choose a less "rude" moniker.

He said: "It's funny and I'm flattered. But on a serious note, come on, give yourself more power as women. Don't just call yourself bitches!

"I know it was a joke, and more of an empowering thing. The majority of [the fans] are smart and savvy and just having fun, but it's getting out there. It sounds a bit [rude]."

The Sherlock star – who recently got engaged to theatre director Sophie Hunter - has several alternative suggestions: "Cumbersomes? Cumbercollective? Cumberfans? There's lots of stuff!"

Thankfully his fiance is at ease with his ever expanding fan base which Benedict says is "impressive".

He said: "She's just so in command of it. It could be a difficult thing, but she's just really cool. It's really impressive."
