Benedict Cumberbatch was joined by his wife Sophie Hunter as he was honoured with a CBE at Buckingham Palace.

The actor, 39, received the accolade from the Queen for services to the performing arts and to charity at the Investiture Ceremony on Tuesday morning.

The official British Monarchy Twitter account tweeted a picture of the Oscar-nominated actor receiving the honour.

With a nod to his career as Sherlock, they captioned the image: "From Baker Street to #BuckinghamPalace, Benedict Cumberbatch receives his CBE from The Queen today."

Cumberbatch said he was nervous ahead of the ceremony but felt “flattered” to be recognised.

Speaking to the BBC he said: "It's fantastic, it's quite nerve-wracking, there is nothing really that prepares you for it.

"It's a unique occasion and I feel very privileged to be here and flattered to be recognised in this way.

"It was wonderful, it was the first time I've ever met her and to meet her and be honoured by her was extraordinary."

The actor – who recently completed a three-month run in Shakespeare's Hamlet at the Barbican – wore traditional morning dress which he finished with a poppy badge.

Hunter looked elegant in a Burberry blue floral embroidered dress which she teamed with a navy fascinator.
