Tim Healy is thought to be ‘fighting for his life’ after being airlifted to hospital.

The British actor was shooting scenes for hit series Benidorm in Spain when he was reportedly rushed to hospital with a ‘mystery illness.’

According to The Mirror, the 64-year-old had been in hospital in Spain for nearly a month before being airlifted to a hospital in Manchester over the weekend.

A source said: “Tim has been in a bad way for a while and had to pull out of filming Benidorm. He was in hospital for three and a half weeks, and at one point he was fighting for his life.

“But he was flown to Manchester on Saturday and his condition has improved. His wife Joan has been by his side throughout the ordeal.

"He’s still in hospital but is making progress. The doctors are keeping a constant eye on him.”

Healy, who used to be married to actress Denise Welch, was thought to be in the middle of filming a new nine-episode series of the ITV show.

An ITV source told the paper: “Filming schedules have been adjusted to accommodate Tim’s absence on screen.”

The Newcastle-born actor is well known for his TV roles in Coronation Street, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Waterloo Road.

Healy has suffered with his health in the past and had to have surgery back in 2011 to unblock arteries in both his legs.

At the time, ex-wife Welch said: “I was terrified Tim could die. I tried to stay strong for him but I was scared.”

Evening Standard Online has contacted Healy's rep for comment.
