Bill Murray burst out of a giant white cake as he celebrated David Letterman’s penultimate show.

Wearing goggles and a cap the Ghostbusters actor fell out of the cake before smearing Letterman and several members of the audience with icing.

Tuesday night marked Murray’s 44th appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman.

The pair reminisced about past episodes as they swigged from a bottle of vodka.

After telling the retiring host why he thinks he should reconsider leaving, Murray then left the studio and took to the streets of New York with a mob of people to help rally support to keep Letterman on the show.

A rabble of fans crowded the actor – who was still covered in cake – as he encouraged the public to sing their support for the chat show host.

Murray was Letterman’s first guest when the show debuted on NBC in 1982 and was also the first guest when the chat show launched on CBS in 1993, which saw him spray paint the name ‘Dave’ across Letterman’s desk.

Over the years he has appeared on the show dressed as Peter Pan, wearing a tuxedo after allegedly water skiing at George Clooney’s wedding and most famously he arrived on stage in 2013 in a Rolls Royce, holding a dog and dressed as Liberace.

CBS are remaining tight lipped about what to expect from Letterman's final show tonight. No interviews have been scheduled, instead "surprises, memorable highlights, the show's final Top Ten List and more" will feature.
