Daniel Craig will be out of action for two weeks as he undergoes surgery after being injured on the set of the new James Bond film.

The actor, 51, was shooting the latest instalment of the spy film series in Jamaica when the accident happened.

Craig slipped while sprinting during an action scene, according to The Sun, and was flown to the US for X-rays.

The film star is now set to undergo “minor” ankle surgery and will be rehabilitating for two weeks, it emerged on Wednesday.

A tweet from the official James Bond account read: "BOND 25 update: Daniel Craig will be undergoing minor ankle surgery resulting from an injury sustained during filming in Jamaica.

"Production will continue whilst Craig is rehabilitating for two weeks post-surgery.

"The film remains on track for the same release date in April 2020."

Craig was reportedly left frustrated by the accident, with filming at Pinewood Studios in London, which was scheduled to begin next week, currently suspended.

The 25th Bond instalment will be Craig's fifth outing as 007.

Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, Rory Kinnear, Naomie Harris and Jeffrey Wright are also returning.

Oscar winner Rami Malek, Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch and Game Night actor Billy Magnussen are joining the cast.

Craig has suffered several injuries since taking on Bond in 2006.

Filming was stalled on Spectre in 2015 after a knee injury saw Craig forced to take two weeks off to recover.

Speaking to Graham Norton later that year he said: “I’ve had my right shoulder re-constructed, my right and left knees operated on and my thumb hurts!”
