Simon Cowell has told how giving up his mobile phone for 10 months has improved his mental health.

The Britain's Got Talent judge said he cut his phone out of his life after becoming too distracted by it.

Despite it being a "strange experience", Cowell said it had "absolutely made me happier".

"I literally have not been on my phone for 10 months," he told the Mail on Sunday.

"The thing I get irritated with is when you have a meeting, everyone's on their phone - and I was probably in that place too. You can't concentrate.

"It has been so good for my mental health. It's a very strange experience but it really is good for you and it has absolutely made me happier."

Last year, a Deloitte survey found 55 per cent of people with mobile phones check their devices within 15 minutes of waking up.

Forty-one per cent of respondents said they felt their partners used their phones too much.

Elton John and Sarah Jessica Parker are among other celebrities said to have ditched their mobiles.
