Doctor Who's head writer Steven Moffat has approached Chris Chibnall to pen more episodes for the BBC sci-fi show as it enters its eighth series.

Chibnall, who also wrote and produced Doctor Who spin off series Torchwood, has already written five episodes for the show including 2012's The Power Of Three.

He told website Cultbox: "I hope to [return for series eight], and Steven [Moffat's] been good enough to ask.

"So we'll just see if all the schedules figure out and stuff like that. But it's always lovely to be on the list."

As Chibnall and Moffat have a good working relationship, the opportunity to collaborate again would be something that Chibnall has said shouldn't be missed.

The Broadchurch creator also added: "It's a delight to go in and write a 'Doctor Who' [episode]. Steven is a great showrunner to work for, and you always do a 'Doctor Who' if there's time, because you can tell stories you can't tell anywhere else."

While Chibnall is keen to return, former screenwriter Russell T. Davies hasn't expressed interest in creating a new episode, with Moffat claiming his close friend still needs a "nice long rest" after working on the show from 2005 to 2010.

Moffat recently said: "I do keep asking him [to write a new episode]. The offer is continually made and I'm getting nowhere!"

Meanwhile, Nick Hurran, who worked on show 'Asylum Of The Daleks' as well as the previous mid-season finale, 'The Angels Take Manhattan' - is set to direct the 50th anniversary episode in November, starring Matt Smith as the titular Time Lord and Jenna-Louise Coleman as his assistant Clara Oswald.
