A US cake company has apologised for posting a “tasteless” tweet in the wake of the death of Carrie Fisher.

Cinnabon posted a picture of Fisher’s Star Wars character Princess Leia made out of cinnamon with a cinnamon roll for her iconic hair style.

The image was captioned: “RIP Carrie Fisher, you'll always have the best buns in the galaxy.”

It sparked a backlash online with some branding it “tasteless” while others criticised the company for “commercialising death”.

The company soon deleted the post and said they were “truly sorry” for causing any upset.

Addressing the backlash they tweeted: “Our deleted tweet was genuinely meant as a tribute, but we shouldn't have posted it. We are truly sorry.”

The actress was recieving treatment in hospital after she suffered a heart attack on a transatlantic flight from London to Los Angeles last week.

Her family announed the news in a statement before a host of Fisher's Star Wars co-stars paid tribute online.

Mark Hamill, who played Fisher's onscreen brother Luke Skywalker, said he had been left "devastated" by the "downright heartbreaking" news.

He described his "beloved space-twin" as a "gorgeous, fiercely independent and ferociously funny, take-charge woman who took our collective breath away".
