Carey Mulligan says she developed a phobia of horses after being thrown from the saddle on a film set.

The actress, 29, plays Bathsheba Everdene in the new adaptation of the Thomas Hardy novel Far From The Madding Crowd and filmed scenes on horseback on location in Dorset, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and London.

She told the Standard: “I got really badly thrown off my horse when I was filming - we were only about two weeks in. I had a terrible concussion for about six weeks.

“I was riding throughout the film but I haven’t got back on a horse since - I’ve developed a bit of a phobia.”

Mulligan was speaking at the Harper’s Bazaar Women Of The Year Awards at Claridge’s, where she picked up the inspiration award for her acting and charity work.

She has just finished filming Suffragette, which centres on the women’s rights movement and also stars Meryl Streep.

Of inequality in the acting world today, Mulligan said: “Suffragette was a film with so many roles for amazing women and it was about women. The majority of films are written for men and about men, and there are great female roles within them. But there aren’t enough female-driven stories out there.”
