Charlie Sheen has revealed he has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Sheen, 50, made the admission on Dr Oz where he opened up about “manic” episodes.

“I've been 'described' or 'diagnosed' by enough people that I guess at some point you have to take a look at it,” he told Dr Mehmet Oz.

The actor – who was fired from Two and a Half Men in 2011 over his erratic behaviour – explained how "deep substance abuse and drinking" caused his manic episodes.

He said: “Manic behaviour is usually in the throes of deep partying, deep substance abuse and drinking. It doesn't really happen when I'm not doing. It has never really reared its head.”

Speaking about the episodes he continued: “They've always seemed normal to me. That's as honest as I can be. I've just accepted it as part of my make-up.”

Sheen said he does not take medication for the disorder but said he would “certainly consider” it.

The bipolar admission comes months after he publicly announced he was HIV positive.

Speaking to Dr Oz last week, he revealed that he travelled to Mexico to seek alternative therapy from Dr Sam Chachoua who claims to be able to cure HIV.

Despite seeing “incredible results early on”, Sheen’s manager, Mark Burg, said the actor has since returned to conventional medication.

He told People: “Just to be clear, Charlie put his life at risk for a doctor who claimed to have a cure for HIV. When it didn't work he immediately went back on his medication.”
