Actress Charlize Theron has described the “terrible” moment she invited President Barack Obama to a strip cub.

In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Theron, 39, relived the awkward encounter that she had backstage on a previous appearance on the US chat show.

Clearly nervous about talking to the 44th President of the United States, Theron explained to Kimmel that she was overcome by a case of “verbal diarrhoea”.

“I have this thing when I'm nervous that I will say something really inappropriate and it's like tourettes,” she said.

“I don't know how to stop it. It's like verbal diarrhoea. He waited to meet me. Everything had stopped around his world to meet me and it was just a lot of pressure.”

The Mad Max actress said Obama was explaining how he had enjoyed starring on the show as it allowed him to reach a “younger demographic”.

Unsure what to say, Theron told Kimmel: “There was this pause, and I didn't know what to say. All I could come up with was, 'Well, if you're looking for a different demographic, I can take you to a strip club.'"

The actress – who recently split from her long term partner Sean Penn – said that despite the unusual invitation, Obama was “gracious” and “nothing but lovely”.

But despite his understanding, Theron revealed that the awkward encounter prevented her from sleeping for weeks.

“I couldn’t sleep for four weeks because every time I closed my eyes I went ‘Oh my God I said that! Oh my God why did I say that?!”
