Daniel Craig has been told to keep quiet by Sony bosses after he said he would rather "slash his wrists" than reprise his role as James Bond for a fifth film, according to reports.

The 47-year-old actor, who plays the 007 agent in forthcoming film Spectre, made the comment during an interview with Time Out and said the only reason he would ever return to the spy franchise would be for the money.

A source told New York Post's Page Six that Craig's animosity stems from the problems encountered during filming.

"They had problems initially with the script, Craig was injured on the set and needed knee surgery, and they were still doing re-shoots last month, even though the movie is out in weeks," the source said.

"It was a very difficult shoot, to say the least."

He also faced a backlash from Grey's Anatomy actress Ellen Pompeo who tweeted that Craig needs a "reality check".

Another source told the publication that the actor thinks he is better than Bond.

"Craig is pretentious and thinks he’s better than Bond, that it doesn’t give him the creative range he needs," they said.

"Plus he hasn’t had a big hit movie outside of the franchise, and he blames that on Bond."

SPECTRE is set for UK release on October 26.
