David Beckham returned to the football pitch for a weekend kick about with family and friends, ahead of his anticipated return to Old Trafford.

The former footballing pro was joined by best friend Dave Gardner, comedian Jack Whitehall and his three sons, Brooklyn, 20, Romeo, 16, and Cruz, 14, for a “warm up” match.

Whitehall shared a photo of himself posing alongside the former England captain, with Beckham clutching a pair of football boots in one hand.

Joking about their respective sporting records with a typically tongue-in-cheek caption, he suggested that he was more Golden Retriever than Golden Balls, writing: “Casual Sunday kick around with @davidbeckham.

“Between us 10 league titles, 2 FA Cups a Champions League and the Marlborough College 3rd XI golden boots (3 goals). Quite the haul. #GoldenBallsAndTheGoldenRetriever.”

Beckham also posted a photo of their game, sharing a group snap of the two teams and writing: “Nice little warm up before the match in a few weeks @davidgardner @romeobeckham @cruzbeckham @brooklynbeckham @jackwhitehall and the rest of the lads.”

The ex-Manchester United star is set to head back to Old Trafford later this month, where he will reunite with his former team mates for a special match to mark 20 years since the club won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in 1999.

The team will play against Bayern Munich on May 26, having defeated the German side in the Champions League final in 1999, and will be managed by Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I’m so excited to be going back to Old Trafford,” Beckham told the BBC earlier this year.

“1999 was such a massive year for us so recreating that moment is going to be really special. To be back together as a squad and to be managed by the boss again is huge. I can’t wait.”
