Ed Sheeran was beaten by protégé Jamie Lawson at the Ivor Novello awards today.

Lawson, 40, last year became the first artist Sheeran, 25, signed to his label. He received the best song musically and lyrically award for Wasn’t Expecting That, which was up against Sheeran and Rudimental’s single Bloodstream.

Best album went to Villagers’ Darling Arithmetic. James Bay, 25, won the award for the song which received the most radio airplay, with Hold Back The River.

Best contemporary song went to All My Friends by Snakehips ft Tinashe & Chance The Rapper.

Adele was named songwriter of the year and Blur’s Damon Albarn received the lifetime achievement award. Both now have three Novellos.

The Happy Mondays were given the inspiration award and Simple Minds the outstanding song collection prize at the ceremony at Mayfair’s Grosvenor House hotel.

The award for outstanding contribution to British music went to Portishead and Bryan Adams received the special international award. Oliver Knussen won the classical music award and Wayne Hector took home the international achievement prize.
