Harry Potter fans were welcomed into a new era of J. K Rowling's wizarding world as the trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them debuted at the MTV Movie Awards.

New footage from the Harry Potter prequel was introduced by Eddie Redmayne who emerged from a suitcase at the Warner Brothers Studios to show viewers "just a wee glimpse at what’s in store".

The two minute clip kicks off by telling viewers that Redmayne's character Newt Scamander was "kicked out of Hogwarts for endangering life with a beast" - but that Albus Dumbledore fought to oppose the expulsion.

The footage follows Scamander as he smuggles beasts into 1920s New York with a "muggle worthy" suitcase.

The trailer also gave fans their first glimpse of Colin Farrell as Percival Graves. On discussing Scamander's beasts he tells concerned onlookers: "No human could do what this thing is capable of."

The trailer closes with Scamander climbing into his suitcase before calling for his muggle roommate Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler) to join him.

The David Yates directed film is set around 70 years before Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger attend Hogwarts - and long before Dumbledore takes over as headmaster.

It also stars Katherine Waterston as Porpentina Goldstein, Ezra Miller as Credence, Ron Perlman as Gnarlack and Jon Voight as Henry Shaw Sr.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them is set for release on November 18.
