Ed Sheeran has gone Down Under to guest star in Australian soap Home and Away.

The Thinking Out Loud singer was spotted soaking up the sun alongside Emily Symons, who plays Marilyn Chambers in the Channel 5 soap, on Palm Beach in Sydney earlier today.

Speaking of his debut role, Sheeran told Australia's News.com: "It's an Australian institution. It's always on in my local chip shop.

"I got asked to do it and it sounded like it could be fun. I did Shortland Street in New Zealand as well and I'm sure if Emmerdale or EastEnders ever ask me in England I would do that as well.

"I have got to a point where I really, really don't care what people think so I'm doing stuff because I enjoy it now rather than because it might be cool. I am just in it for fun."

The 24-year-old’s scenes are top secret but it has been confirmed that the Brit will play himself.

A post on the show’s Facebook page read: "He will appear as himself in the series, but the storyline details about what brings Ed to Summer Bay are being kept under wraps for now."

Sheeran is currently in Australia to perform a string of dates in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, but has been experiencing problems with his voice.

Earlier today he told fans that he is under doctor’s orders to not talk in between shows.

“Been told by the vocal doc not to talk at all between shows and they're giving me a white board to communicate with, could prove interesting,” he tweeted.
