After a career spanning four decades and countless powerhouse performances, Gary Oldman has finally been honoured with his first ever Oscar.

The London-born star thanked his friends, family and 99-year-old mother as he collected the trophy for his portrayal of Sir Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour at Sunday night’s ceremony.

Beating fellow nominees Denzel Washington, Daniel Day-Lewis, Timothee Chalamet and Daniel Kaluuya, Oldman appeared emotional as he took to the stage at the 90th Academy Awards.

Here is Gary Oldman’s speech in full:

“My deepest thanks to the Academy and its members for this glorious prize.

“I owe this and so much more to so many. I’ve lived in America for the longest time and I am deeply grateful to her for the loves and the friendships I have made and the many wonderful gifts it has given me - my home, my livelihood, my family and now Oscar.

“The movies, such is their power, captivated a young man from south London and gave him a dream.

“And Douglas Urbanski, my dear, dear friend and brother, you have helped keep that dream alive. Joe Wright, thank you for this, it only took 20 years for us to work together. But it was well worth the wait.

“Thank you Alfie, Gully, Charlie, William and my remarkable fellow nominees and dear friends out there, Denzel , and obviously I’m not going to win the ski.

“I’d like to thank my mother who is older than the Oscar, she is 99 years young next birthday and she’s watching the ceremony from the comfort of her sofa. I say to my mother thank you for your love and support, put the kettle on, I’m bringing Oscar home.”
