George Clooney brands ‘hypocrite’ Donald Trump a ‘Hollywood elitist’

George Clooney has launched another attack on Donald Trump, branding him a “Hollywood elitist”.

The US actor, 55, hit out at the President over his comments about Meryl Streep being an “over rated” actress after she referenced him during her Golden Globes acceptance speech.

In an interview with French channel Canal+, Clooney said: “There’s a really interesting argument, this is the part that makes you a little crazy.

“When Meryl spoke, everyone on that one side was, ‘Well that’s elitist Hollywood speaking.’ Donald Trump has 22 acting credits in television ... He collects $120,000 a year in his Screen Actors Guild pension fund. He is a Hollywood elitist.”

Clooney also called for journalists to hold Mr Trump's “feet to the fire”.

He said: “We have a demagogue in the White House. We need the fourth estate, which is journalists, to hold his feet to the fire.

“They didn’t do a very good job during the campaign and they haven’t done a particularly good job yet, but those things will change.”

It is not the first time Clooney - who is set to become a father to twins with his wife Amal Clooney - has criticised the President.

Sepaking at an event in January he said Mr Trump was not the right choice to run the country and said he is living in hope that he will do a good job.

“I didn’t vote for him, I don’t support him, I don’t think he’s the right choice,” he said.

“At this moment in our lives we have to hope that he doesn’t destroy everything.

“The reality is you have to hope he will do a decent job because if the United States fails, really terrible things happen, so you have to hope that he can. I don’t see any signs of it.”

Clooney said that the US had been ‘lucky’ with its presidents in the past, but that the country is a “little unlucky” with Mr Trump in the White House.
