Golden Globes 2016: The Revenant and The Martian win big as Leonardo DiCaprio picks up Best Actor

The Revenant and The Martian were the big winners at this year’s Golden Globe Awards.

Leonardo DiCaprio picked up the Best Actor gong for his leading role in the Alejandro G Inarritu- directed film, which was also named Best Picture.

Brie Larson was named Best Actress in a Drama for Room, while awards favourite Jennifer Lawrence added another trophy to her collection when she was named Best Actress in a Musical of Comedy for David O Russell’s Joy.

Matt Damon won Best actor in the same category for The Martian, which was a surprise winner in the Best Musical or Comedy category.

Over in the supporting categories, Kate Winslet won an award for her role in Steve Jobs, which she admitted came as a such a huge shock that she’d booked a massage for directly after the show.

Sylvester Stallone also picked up a supporting trophy for his role in Creed.

Beating off competition from Ridley Scott and Todd Haynes, Alejandro G Inarritu was named Best Director for The Revenant, marking another big win for the film.

Speaking to the room at the Beverly Hilton in LA on Sunday night, DiCaprio said: “What an incredible honor.

"Wow, that meant a lot.

“To the other fantastic performances in this category, you guys were incredible.

“Two years ago we were immersed in nature.

"This movie was about trust and no one was more deserving of our trust than our director.

"The depths to which he and the entire crew went to make this film were incredible.”

The 41-year-old also took the opportunity speak out about indigenous rights, saying: “I want to thank all of the indigenous people in the world.

"It is time we protect your land and heard your voices.”

Picking up her trophy, Larson said: “Thank you so much.

“The Hollywood Foreign Press it’s been incredible getting to know you. You are such an incredible group of people. I need to thank my team.

"My mum and thank you Alex, my love. I am sorry to anyone I forgot I will write you a thank you note.”

Winslet seemed more surprised than most, saying: “I really am actually extremely surprised and overwhelmed.

“Is this really happening. What an incredible year for women in film. I feel prouder than ever to be included this year.”

Other famous faces at the ceremony - who were sipping on offical awards champagne Moët & Chandon - included Katy Perry, Amy Schumer and Will Smith.
