Good Morning Britain has been criticised on social media for "blind-siding" Mariah Carey with questions about the Las Vegas shooting.

The singer was booked on the show to discuss her upcoming Christmas tour in the UK but the presenters soon switched the subject to the violent incident, which occurred Sunday night, at a country music festival on the Las Vegas strip.

Carey was originally criticised for seeming to treat the subject with disrespect by taking part in the interview while lounging on a sofa in front of a Christmas tree, but viewers soon jumped to her defence.

"Shame on @GMB using a pre planned @MariahCarey interview to blind side her about Vegas shooting," one viewer tweeted. "Classless tactics & now she's getting stick (sic)."

Another viewer tweeted: "Finding #gmb in bad taste this morning, breaking Vegas news to Mariah Carey looking for some sort of scoop or reaction."

"Mixing a pre-arranged interview w Mariah Carey (& Xmas tree?!) with awful news from Las Vegas," posted another. "Surreal, unfair to her, poor journalism."

Piers Morgan defended the programme's decision to ask Mariah about the Las Vegas shooting, arguing that the breaking news took precedence.

"Mariah was booked to do an interview about her UK Christmas tour," Piers tweeted. "Obviously news events in Vegas have now taken precedence."

Carey told the show that the shooting was "horrible" and she later tweeted: "Horrified to hear about the shooting in #LasVegas. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. Praying for everyone's safety."

At least two people were killed and 24 people injured after a gunman opened fire on a crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Country Music festival in Las Vegas.

According to police, a suspect was shot dead at The Mandalay Bay resort and casino on the city's famous strip, which has been placed on lockdown.
