Holmes, who also presents ITV's This Morning every Friday with his wife Ruth Langsford, had been tipped to take over Daybreak which is hosted by Lorraine Kelly and Aled Jones.

It was relaunched last year, with the pair replacing Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley, but was seen by 400,000 fewer viewers than tuned in to see the programme make its debut three years ago.

Chiles and Bleakley were axed in December 2011 after they failed to recreate their success from The One Show on the BBC and audiences slipped away.
