A Royal Duty by Paul Burrell (Penguin, £6.99)

More than 600,000 people in the UK bought the hardback edition of this tale of what the butler saw inside Buck House, Windsor Castle, Highgrove and Kensington Palace.

The Epilogue added to this paperback edition contains no new revelations but describes how poor little Burrell weathered the media storm the original publication caused.

The now familiar anger, self-justification, namedropping, hagiography and schmaltz are all present and (in)correct.

Charles and Camilla remain the villains of the piece. Since "there were, and still are, many secrets between butler and princess", it may be better to wait for the inevitable sequel.

Those who cannot should be warned that reading Burrell is akin to wolfing down a whole box of Charbonnel et Walker violet creams: you know you shouldn't, you know you'll feel sick and guilty afterwards, but you just can't stop. Diana would have understood.
