Despite having a good job and a hefty deposit at the ready, Susie Tempest is back living in the bedroom she knew as a teenager.

The public relations consultant moved in with her parents in Greenwich six months ago after a tenancy in Tooting ended.

Her £26,000 salary and a £50,000 deposit from her father, a retired oil consultant, would allow her to spend about £130,000, she says.

She wants a one-bedroom period flat in south London but has been unable to find anything suitable for less than £170,000.

Her financial adviser has suggested she looks in East Croydon or considers a former council flat in Peckham. Ms Tempest, 28, said: "Living at home is driving me moderately insane. I feel I've gone back to being a teenager, spending my whole time in my bedroom.

"What I really miss is having my own space and having people round for supper.

"I spend the majority of my nights staying with friends and at my boyfriend's. I always seem to be carrying a rucksack around.

"I don't want to rent again because I would feel like I was wasting my money. I want to get on the property ladder. My father is upset he can't do more but his savings have halved in value because they are linked to the stock market."
