Online Safety Guide — For Children

1) Always show respect for other people in a chat room. Never send any unpleasant or threatening email messages. Remember that what you write can be copied and sent on to thousands of other people including your parents or even your school.

2) Don’t give out any personal information about yourself or your family. Even if you are chatting to a real friend, other people in the chat room can see what you are writing.

3) Be cautious about using your real name online. Don’t give out information about your school, your family, your home address, local park or where you play with friends.

4) Don’t meet a chat room ‘friend’ in person on your own without a parent or teacher. Remember many of these people in the chat rooms are strangers and you would never talk to strangers in the street.

5) Always tell your parents or a teacher when you are going to be using the web or a chat room.

6) If someone online makes you feel uncomfortable or scared then leave the chat room and switch off the computer.

7) If someone sends you a message that upsets you then you can report them to abuse@thisislondon.co.uk.

8) If someone continues to upset or threaten you then always tell a parent or a teacher.

9) Never open an email attachment from someone you don’t know
