East London rapper Ghetts will go head-to-head with Jorja Smith and The 1975 after being nominated in this year’s prestigious Ivor Novello Awards.

The 34-year-old grime star was today shortlisted for best contemporary song for Black Rose, featuring Kojey Radical, which is taken from his second album Ghetto Gospel: The New Testament. He was nominated alongside Smith, for Blue Lights, and The 1975, for Love It If We Made It.

In the best song musically and lyrically category, Arctic Monkeys — who won an Ivor for their debut album in 2007 — will battle it out with Ben Howard and Irish singer Hozier.

They have been nominated for Four Out Of Five, Nica Libres At Dusk and Nina Cried Power respectively.

In the best album category, Mercury Prize winners Young Fathers are nominated for Cocoa Sugar. They are up against I’m All Ears from pop duo Let’s Eat Grandma and Joy As An Act Of Resistance by punk rockers Idles.

In the running for the PRS for music most performed work award — which goes to the song that was broadcast and played online the most in the UK last year — is George Ezra for Shotgun, Rudimental ft Jess Glynne, Macklemore and Dan Caplen for These Days and Jax Jones for Breathe.

Ivors academy chair Crispin Hunt said: “The Ivors 2019 are brilliantly diverse, and we’re delighted to see so many first-time nominees recognised.”

The awards will be presented at Grosvenor House in Park Lane on May 23.
