It was the moment we’d been waiting for all awards season.

After months of near misses at various ceremonies, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt were photographed reuniting backstage at the SAG Awards on Sunday (January 19) evening.

It was a successful night for the former couple, who married in 2000 and split in 2005, with Pitt receiving the Best Supporting Actor trophy for Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood and Aniston named Best Actress in a Drama Series for The Morning Show.

But their wins became just a footnote in the Brad and Jen saga, as the first pictures of the pair together in more than 15 years sent the internet into meltdown.

Naturally, social media users had plenty to say about the photos. Here’s how Twitter responded to the emotional rollercoaster of Aniston and Pitt’s big reunion...

Emotions were naturally running high…

And people became very invested, very quickly

The nostalgia kicked in

Others spared a thought for showbiz journalists - especially those working at certain US gossip magazines

Some dampened our spirits when they reminded us of the reason Aniston and Pitt broke up back in 2005

The pop culture references came thick and fast…

Along with some more unexpected jokes about… the New York Times' endorsement in the Democratic candidacy race

Pitt's SAG success cements his position as the favourite to take home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards next month. He has received four acting Oscar nominations throughout his career, and has a Best Picture Oscar for 12 Years A Slave, which was produced by his company Plan B.

Other SAG Award winners included Joaquin Phoenix (Best Actor), Renee Zellweger (Best Actress) and Laura Dern (Best Supporting Actress).

South Korean film Parasite was a surprise winner in the Best Ensemble category, beating the likes of Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood, The Irishman and Bombshell.
