Chat show host Jimmy Fallon has revealed that he nearly had his finger amputated following an accident at his home.

Fallon was forced to take a two week break from the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon when he broke his finger after he tripped and fell on a rug.

"What a crazy break we had - a two week break," Fallon said. "So basically what happened is, I tripped and fell in my kitchen on a braided rug that my wife loves and I can't wait to burn it to the ground. I tripped and fell and I caught my fall. I'm getting up and my finger is sideways."

He continued: "So I go, 'Oh my god, did I just break my finger?'

"This is the lamest thing in the whole wide world. It completely looks fake. It looks like a cheap horror movie where you see a broken finger."

Explaining why the injury was so bad he added: "Basically what it is is my ring got caught on the countertop when I was going down and stuck there and pulled my finger off.”

After being diagnosed with ring avulsion, the Saturday Night Live alum revealed that he was sent to Bellevue Hospital where they were able to perform microsurgery - which involved taking a vein from his foot and transplanting it into his finger.

"Apparently the odds aren't great with these things," Fallon said. "This happens a lot and the odds are not - usually they just gonna cut your finger off."

Despite being admitted to ICU for 10 days and being unable to feel his finger for another eight weeks, Fallon said he saw the hilarity in the incident.

"The fall was funny," he said. "I’m a comedian so I have to fall funny. If it was me watching me, I would laugh."
