JK Rowling has tricked Piers Morgan into mocking his own words on Twitter.

The Harry Potter creator, 51, has been embroiled in a war of words with the Good Morning Britain host, but appeared to end the feud with a knock out blow.

Rowling tweeted a screen grab of an article which praises her for encouraging children to read, and called for the mystery writer to reveal themselves.

She wrote: “Just been sent this! Could the writer let me know who he is? I'd love to thank him! #Valentines.”

Morgan accused her of “humblebragging” – but failed to realise that the excerpt was from a Daily Mail article titled The 100 British celebrities who really matter by Piers Morgan.

Rowling fans were quick to praise the author for calling out Morgan with one claiming she had given them the “best day of my life”.

One user joked that Rowling’s comeback was “blistering”, while others teased Morgan for having a “secret crush” on the author.

Morgan insisted that he had been in on the joke the whole time, tweeting: “Relax, quarter-wit, I knew what it was. Just surprised I put her as high as 97th.”

Their public spat kicked off when Rowling shared a clip of Morgan being told to “f*** off” on US show Real Time with Bill Maher.

She tweeted: “Yes, watching Piers Morgan being told to f*** off on live TV is *exactly* as satisfying as I'd always imagined.”

Morgan replied: “This is why I've never read a single word of Harry Potter.”

Rowling hit back: “Because you had a premonition that one day the author would roar with laughter at seeing you called out for your b******* on live TV?”

They then went on to slate each other's political views with Morgan accusing Hillary Clinton supporter Rowling of having “superior, dismissive arrogance” while Rowling branded Morgan a “bully” over his friendship with Donald Trump.

Harry Potter fan and bokshop owner Simon Key jumped in to defend Rowling and set about tweeting Morgan the entirety of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
