Kate Bush beats Adele and PJ Harvey to win music prize

Kate Bush triumphed over Adele and Grayson Perry beat David Hockney in the second annual South Bank Sky Arts Awards today.

Sir Tom Jones was presenting Bush with the award for 50 Words For Snow which won in an all-female shortlist also including PJ Harvey.

Tracey Emin handed the visual arts gong to Perry for his hit exhibition, The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman, at the British Museum.

The theatre adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda saw off One Man Two Guvnors, while We Need To Talk About Kevin was named best film.

The opera honour went to the ENO’s production of The Damnation of Faust, and The Metamorphosis in the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Studio Theatre took the dance prize.

Channel 4’s Fresh Meat was best comedy and Sherlock was named best television drama. Sir Tom Stoppard presented Michael Frayn, author of West End hit Noises Off and a new novel, Skios, with an outstanding achievement award, in association with The Dorchester where the ceremony was held.

The South Bank Show, which was axed by ITV in 2010, returns on Sky Arts 1 on May 27.
