Kate Hudson has said her new film Deepwater Horizon will help people to understand the “terrifying” BP Oil spill disaster.

Hudson, 37, shines a light on the struggles of being an offshore worker’s wife in the Peter Berg directed film which tells the story of the drilling rig Deepwater Horizon.

The rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010 and created the worst oil spill in US history.

Hudson plays Felicia alongside Mark Wahlberg as her onscreen husband Mike Williams.

Speaking about the film she said: “What’s exciting about this film is that people will not only understand more about what happened on the Deepwater Horizon, but also get to know these people and the actual experience of how terrifying and challenging it was.”

The film is based on the New York Times article, “Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hour” which detailed the courage of those who were working on the rig when the disaster struck.

Hudson also stars alongside Kurt Russell - who helped raise her after her mother Goldie Hawn split from her biological father Bill Hudson.

Speaking about starring together, Hudson told InStyle: “I knew the script was interesting and I knew I wanted to work with Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg, but I also wanted to be involved in this because of my dad.

“It was great to be filming in New Orleans as a family. It was summer, so Pa [Russell] actually lived with my brother Oliver, who was shooting Scream Queens there.

“They got a house together with Ollie’s kids and I would bring my kids, so we made it a big family thing for about a month. I knew it was really rare and special.”

She added: “[Kurt and I] didn’t really work together in scenes, but now we get to travel to premieres with each other to promote the film and that’s really fun.”

Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O'Brien and John Malkovich also star.

Deepwater Horizon is set for UK cinema release on September 29.
