Zayn Malik may have left One Direction, but the pop star set Twitter alight as he appeared to make a surprise entrance into the General Election campaign.

Policeman Zaid Malik had many wondering if the former boy band singer was in the TV audience as Kay Burley quizzed David Cameron during Sky and Channel 4’s Cameron & Miliband Live: The Battle for Number 10 debate.

Predictably, viewers took to Twitter to question whether the former One Direction singer was sitting in the audience on Thursday night.

One user tweeted: “Did @KayBurley just introduce Zayn Malik to the PM with a question? #BattleForNumber10."

Another joked that Burley was finding it hard to cope with Malik’s recent departure from the boy band, tweeting: “Was that chap really called Zayn Malik? Or is Kay Burley struggling with the 1D news? #zaynonthebrain #ZaynMalik #cameronvsmiliband.”

He later joked: "OMGGGGG!!!! SORRY SOMEONE CALLED JUSTIN BIEBER HAS A QUESTION!!!! #BattleForNumber10."
