Liam Payne lashed out at Louis Walsh, telling him to "shut the f*** up" after he hit out at his girlfriend Cheryl.

Payne, 23, launched a Twitter tirade at Walsh hours after the music manager told Cheryl to “f*** off”.

Walsh made the comment at a photocall with his band 5 After Midnight where he was asked how he would feel if Cheryl returned to The X Factor.

“Well Simon wouldn't invite Cheryl back because we have Nicole,” he replied.

“We have Nicole and Sharon, we don't need another girl. So go and f*** off now! No silly questions, seriously.

“It's not about Cheryl. Don't be stupid, man.”

Payne leapt to the defence of Cheryl – who was once managed by Walsh – and tweeted: “Congratulations Louis Walsh for setting the worst example on handling media for his band who are about to step into a very hard industry.

“Maybe it's about time you realise it's not all about you and shut the f*** up for once, let them speak.”

Walsh and Cheryl have had spats since his relationship with Girls Aloud went down hill.

Earlier this year he implied that Cheryl can't sing during an appearance on BB Radio 2.

Speaking about Girls Aloud he said: "I didn't give them a lot of my time but they didn't give me time and they didn't even like each other.

"Nadine was the only real singer there. She should have married the footballer.

"Look at Victoria Beckham, it worked for her. And Louise Redknapp... and wasn't Cheryl married to a footballer?"

Walsh also previously described Cheryl as "lazy" and "irrelevant" during her stint on last year's X Factor.

Hitting back at his comments she tweeted: "Dear Lou Lou. Try using your mouth to say something positive abt something positive.

"I am beginning to wonder if Louis has some kind of an obsession with me..."
