Lorde may have Grammy and Billboard awards to her name, but one cab driver was unaware of her fame and instead gushed about a previous celebrity passenger.

Lorde – real name Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor – said a recent Uber driver was “busting a nut” as he told her about a "celebrity passenger" he had picked up before her.

The 19-year-old Royals singer said her journey “sparkles significantly less” as she recalled the awkward ride in a series of funny tweets.

“Uber driver currently busting a nut about the fact that there was a 'celebrity passenger' just before me,” she posted.

“I can tell our ride, by comparison, sparkles significantly less for him.

“I can feel it from the back seat, his dazed glow. He's probably now pretending that I am not here, that they are still together, and alone.”

Ellie Goulding sympathised and said she had suffered a similar experience in which a cab driver, unaware that he was chauffeuring the singer, said he was not a fan of her music.

She tweeted: “Mine said he had someone from Ellie Goulding's band in earlier. But didn't like her music soooo.”

Lorde replied: “I just winced.”

The Tennis Court singer recently called out Twitter trolls after Ghostbusters actress Leslie Jones was bombarded with abusive messages.

Defending Jones, Lorde tweeted: "@Lesdoggg was so cool to us when we played SNL. lady is bad***, beautiful & a MOVIE STAR, and you trolls live rent free at your mum's house."
