Madonna performed a unique take on her hit song Holiday - with a cowbell and whistles.

The 56-year-old made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon where she was joined by the host and his house band The Roots for a new take on the song from her 1983 self-titled debut album.

Wearing a pair of sunglasses and blowing on a whistle, Madonna sang the lyrics while a floral shirt wearing Fallon and The Roots created the tune on wood blocks, bass drums, a Casio keyboard, a xylophone and even a kazoo.

Madonna - who recently announced a string of dates for her much anticipated Rebel Hearts Tour - also made her stand-up debut on the show.

Talking to Fallon, she described herself as a "closet comedian" before he offered her the opportunity to showcase her hidden talent.

Clearly nervous at the prospect of debuting her jokes she asked the audience: "Will you guys laugh if my jokes suck?"

She then went on to tell a string of jokes about dating younger guys.
