There could be a third Mamma Mia film, the hugely popular musical series' co-creator has said.

And the movie could feature new music from Abba, the Swedish pop group whose songs provide the soundtrack to the first two films.

Judy Craymer, who produced the stage musical and the two films that have been released so far, said "there's meant to be" a third film.

She told the Daily Mail: “I was meant to have been getting on with that, in my head, during these months. But then I got hit with Covid fog.

“I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see. I know Universal would like me to do it.”

The first film, starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, came out in 2008 and was a box-office hit, grossing more than $600 million worldwide.

The sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, hit cinemas with the same lineup of stars a decade later and raked in nearly $400 million.

And ABBA member Bjorn Ulvaeus has said he is "open" to the prospect of making a third film, if it were suggested.

The singer told Magic Radio: "I doubt that very much, but I probably said after the first film that there won't be a second. So, you never know.

"But, you know, why we did the second film was that [Oliver] Parker and Richard Curtis came up with this idea and that's why we did it.

"So, if someone comes up with an idea for Mamma Mia 3, we'll have a look at it."
