Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey shared a celebratory family picture with fans as wife Camila Alves became a US citizen.

The actor posed with his 33-year-old Brazilian wife and their three children inside a US courthouse on Tuesday after she'd said her Pledge Of Allegiance.

McConaughey tweeted the picture, captioning it: "Congratulations Camila on getting your U.S. citizenship today - another fellow and great American."

Alves, who arrived in the US at the age of 15, added: "First day back and look what I just went thru. It is with great pride and honor that I am happy to say I now hold an American passport!"

"I have so much respect and appreciation for this country... #newuscitizen."

The couple, who have children Levi, Vida and Livingston, first met back in 2006 and married six years later in 2012.

Alves, who is now a successful model and handbag designer, first visited the US to see her aunt when she was a teenager and never left.

She worked as a waitress and cleaner for four years before turning her hand to modelling, telling the hosts of The View back in 2013:

"My father always told me, "Before you become a queen you have to learn how to take care of your own things."

"So I knew how to do all of it, but I had never really done it on a daily basis. So I was cleaning houses and I started working restaurants."
