Dancing on Ice fans are convinced that Megan Barton Hanson and Wes Nelson are still a couple, despite the former Love Island stars having confirmed their break-up over the weekend.

Barton Hanson, 24, and Nelson, 21, who met on the ITV2 reality show last summer, parodied Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s infamous “consciously uncoupling” statement in an Instagram post on Saturday.

The reality stars announced that they “have decided to separate” after six months together, but reassured fans that they will remain “parents first and foremost to one incredibly wonderful hamster.”

In a second, more emotional message, Barton Hanson added: “In all seriousness, I am so grateful and so bless to have found Wes. I will always love and adore him and I am so lucky to call him my best friend.”

In an unusual display of solidarity with her ex, Barton Hanson was present at last night’s Dancing on Ice live show to cheer on Nelson and his professional partner Vanessa Bauer.

Though some viewers praised her decision as “sweet,” others were left confused, with some even speculating that the break-up was “a publicity stunt.”

“How [does] anyone ‘believe’ Megan’s ‘conscious uncoupling statement,” one Twitter user wrote, adding: “Her & Wes are still together and laughing at all the ‘split’ headlines.”

“Anyone else think the Megan and Wes split is made up and in a few weeks they’ll ‘get back together’??” another viewer asked.

One fan slammed the situation as “weird,” before predicting: “There is no way this isn’t a publicity stunt… 100% be back together in a month!”

Another described the split as “a tactical publicity stunt,” while yet more Twitter users suggested that the couple could reunite “once [Nelson]’s won Dancing on Ice.”

Standard Online has contacted representatives for Nelson and Barton Hanson for comment.

Nelson topped the leaderboard during last night's episode, and will return to compete in next week's fairytale-themed show along with Bauer.

Dancing on Ice is on ITV, Sunday at 6pm
