Actress Mia Farrow has paid tribute to her "wonderful, courageous" son Thaddeus Wilk Farrow after he committed suicide.

The 27-year-old was found "suffering from a life threatening injury" in Connecticut, according to a police report and was taken to Danbury Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:30pm on Wednesday.

Authorities in Connecticut ruled the death of Thaddeus Wilk Farrow a suicide, saying he shot himself in the torso.

Mia adopted Thaddeus – who was a paraplegic due to polio – from an orphanage in Calcutta, India in 1994 after her divorce from Woody Allen.

In a statement on her Twitter account, the actress said: "We're devastated by the loss of Thaddeus, our beloved son and brother.

"He was a wonderful courageous person who overcame so much hardship in his short life. We miss him.

"Thank you for the outpouring of condolences and words of kindness."

She also urged anyone needing help to visit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention website.

Thaddeus spoke about being adopted by Mia in a 2013 interview with Vanity Fair.

"It was scary to be brought to a world of people whose language I did not understand, with different skin colours,” he said.

“The fact that everyone loved me was a new experience, overwhelming at first.”

Thaddeus is Farrow's third adopted child to pass away. Tam Farrow died from heart failure in 2000 and Lark Previn died in 2008.
