Michael Keaton was so excited at winning an Oscar he fist pumped his way to the stage.

Keaton, 64, was overcome with excitement as his latest film Spotlight took the coveted Best Picture award at Sunday night’s ceremony.

The actor – who plays Walter 'Robby' Robinson in the Tom McCarthy directed film – jumped out of his seat as Morgan Freeman announced the winning name.

En route to the stage he fist pumped the air and shouted “F**k yeah”.

But the celebrations didn’t stop there. On taking to the stage the actor toasted his win with a box of Girl Scout cookies which Chris Rock had encouraged guests to buy to raise money for his daughter’s Girl Scout group.

Spotlight – which fought off competition from Alejandro González Iñárritu's The Revenant and Ridley Scott’s The Martian to take Best Picture – also walked away with Best Original Screenplay.

Speaking about the film, producer Michael Sugar said: "Wow. This film gave a voice to survivors. And this Oscar amplifies that voice, which we hope will become a choir that will resonate all the way to the Vatican."

Other big winners on the night included Brie Larson who won Best Actress, Mark Rylance who took Best Supporting Actor, Alicia Vikander who won Best Supporting Actress and Leonardo DiCaprio who was finally crowned Best Actor after five years of losing out on the title.
