Downton Abbey actress Michelle Dockery will star opposite The Wire’s Dominic West in a new West End stage adaptation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

The 34-year-old will take on the iconic role of Madame de Tourvel, with West as the duplicitous Vicomte de Valmont in the 30th anniversary revival of Christopher Hampton’s play, to be directed by Josie Rourke.

Opening at the Donmar Warehouse in December next year, the play will also co-star Janet McTeer as the unscrupulous Marquise de Merteuil.

Rourke said: “I have long wanted to direct Christopher Hampton's superb Les Liaisons Dangereuses. And the cast we have drawn together is a testament to the brilliance of his play.

“As well as welcoming Janet McTeer back to the Donmar, I am thrilled that Dominic West will return to our stage in this production.”

Hampton’s adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’s 18th century novel was a big hit for the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1980s, prompting Stephen Frear’s 1988 Oscar-winning film adaptation, starring John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Dockery, who is still starring in ITV’s Downton Abbey, is no stranger to the stage, and has even been nominated for an Olivier Award in the past.

The actress recently admitted that she’d never considered leaving Downton for Hollywood like former co-star Dan Stevens.

She said: “I love playing Mary, and I love being part of a show that for all of us has been really special.

“None of us ever imagined how huge a success it would become. Why would I want to leave that?”
